Sign-up bonus bets explained: who can get one, how it's sized, and what it's worth

A sign-up bonus bet is a bonus bet issued for opening an account and making a first deposit or first bet. It's the most searched promo type in Australia and the most restricted one: state law shuts NSW, ACT, WA and SA residents out of offers, Victorians out of account-opening offers, and Sportsbet says it doesn't run one at all. This guide shows what the terms actually say and works a first bet out on $50.

What a sign-up bonus bet is

Bookmakers don't use the phrase. Sportsbet's terms call it an offer "where the Offer relates to opening an Account" (clause 2.1); TAB's Promo T&Cs talk about a "Promo Deposit" made with a promo code (clause 61.1(b)); PointsBet issues a "Bet & Get" token that unlocks a bonus bet as you place qualifying bets.1 Whatever the label, the product is the same token described on the bonus bet page: separate balance, one use, profit only, seven-day life.

The one bookmaker that answers the question directly says no. Sportsbet's help article: "Unfortunately, Sportsbet do not offer any promotions upon signing up and creating an account. There are also no promotions offered for referring a friend."2 Offers come later, to members who have opted in to marketing.3

Who's eligible, state by state

This is the clause that matters most, and it's about where you live. Sportsbet clause 2.1: "Offers are not available to residents of ACT, NSW, WA and SA, and, where the Offer relates to opening an Account, Victorian residents ('Excluded Residents')."1 TAB clause 64.1: residents of "NSW, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and/or Western Australia" may be ineligible, and each promo's own terms say which.4

StateSportsbet clause 2.1TAB clause 64
NSWExcluded from all offersMay be ineligible
ACTExcluded from all offersNot named
WAExcluded from all offersMay be ineligible
SAExcluded from all offersMay be ineligible
VICExcluded from account-opening offersMay be ineligible
QLDNot namedMay be ineligible
TAS, NTNot namedNot named

Behind Sportsbet's list is the law. NSW's s.33H bans publishing a betting advertisement with an inducement to open an account, and the other named states have their own equivalents; the NSW page goes through it.6 The residual conditions are the usual ones: 18 or over, an account, Australian resident, and at Sportsbet "bona fide Account holders, who act at all times in good faith" (clause 8.1); at TAB a "Recreational Gambler" who isn't an "Excluded Customer" (clause 60.1).4 PointsBet adds that eligibility "can change over time based on myriad factors, such as account activity history and responsible gambling policies".5

How the token is sized: the cap does the work

An account-opening offer is nearly always a bet match or a deposit match, and the percentage in the headline matters less than the cap. Sportsbet's clause 3.3 gives a hypothetical, marked as illustrative and not an offer: a bonus bet equal to the qualifying bet up to $50.1

Worked example · bet match with a $50 cap (Sportsbet clause 3.3 illustration)

First bet $10
token $10
First bet $50
token $50
First bet $100
token $50 (cap reached, a 50% ratio)
Token from a $50 first bet
$50.00

Above the cap every extra dollar you bet earns nothing, so the first bet that makes sense is the cap itself. TAB rounds the other way too: a promo benefit "will always be a whole dollar amount", rounded down, so 50% of a $75 stake is $37, not $37.50 (clause 61.5).4 The deposit match page works the deposit version, where the illustration runs to 300% and a $75 cap.

What the first bet has to be

The qualifying bet has its own rules. TAB clause 62.2: unless the promo says otherwise, "the Promo Bet must be a single bet, (multi and Super Multi bets are not valid Promo Bets)" and "cannot be an each way bet".4 Clause 62.4: one benefit "for the first Promo Bet which satisfies the relevant criteria", however many bets you place. Sportsbet clause 2.5: "Each Offer can only be accessed once by each Eligible Entrant."1

Cancellations kill it. TAB clause 61.4 walks through four cases: if the promo needed a winning or losing bet, a cancelled bet can't satisfy it; if it needed a three-leg multi and one leg is refunded, the multi no longer counts.4 The token arrives "within 24 hours, but usually much sooner" at Sportsbet (clause 3.4) and within "2 business days" at TAB (clause 62.6). PointsBet's Bet & Get token shows a tracker, "for example $0.00 / $25.00 in Bonus Bets", that fills as qualifying bets settle, and you redeem it by hand.5

Whether you're offered one depends on your state and the bookmaker's own list; what the token is worth once you have it is the same everywhere, and the comparison shows the three sets of terms next to each other.

What a $50 sign-up token is worth

Once issued, the token is an ordinary bonus bet. At $2.00 it credits $50, at $3.00 it credits $100, at $1.50 it credits $25, and the $50 itself never lands.1 Your first deposit sits under a separate rule: it has to be turned over once before it can be withdrawn, at every bookmaker, promo or not. The turnover page works that out. Put the two together and a $50 deposit with a $50 matched token means $50 of your own money bet once, plus one shot at the token's profit.

Account-opening offers weighed up

Where they help

  • The largest token most punters will ever be issued, sized to the cap.
  • The qualifying bet is your own bet at your own price; nothing forces a market on you.
  • Seven days is enough time to wait for a price you want.

Where they cost

  • Not available at all to NSW, ACT, WA and SA residents under Sportsbet's terms, nor to Victorians for account opening.
  • Sportsbet doesn't run one.
  • The first bet must be a single, not each-way, and a cancelled leg voids the qualification.
  • Profit only: worth half a cash bet at $2.00.

My verdict

If you're in Queensland, Tasmania or the Northern Territory, an account-opening bonus bet can be worth having: bet exactly the cap as a single at the longest price you'd back, and use the token within the week. If you're in NSW, ACT, WA or SA, the terms of the bookmakers on this ledger don't offer you one, and no site should be promising otherwise. Either way, the token's value is (token × price) − token, and the comparison shows whose terms say it plainest.

Questions punters ask

Does Sportsbet give a sign-up bonus?

Its help centre says no: Sportsbet does not offer any promotions upon signing up and creating an account, and none for referring a friend. Offers arrive after you're a member and subscribed to marketing.

Can I get a sign-up bonus bet in NSW?

Not under the current terms. Sportsbet's clause 2.1 excludes NSW, ACT, WA and SA residents from offers altogether, and NSW law (s.33H) bans advertising an inducement to open an account. TAB's clause 64 lists NSW among states that may be ineligible.

Can Victorians get a sign-up bonus bet?

Sportsbet's clause 2.1 adds Victorian residents to the excluded list where the offer relates to opening an account. Other offers can still reach Victorians; TAB's clause 64 names Victoria among the states that may be ineligible.

How is a first-bet bonus calculated?

As a bonus bet equal to the qualifying bet up to a cap. Sportsbet's clause 3.3 illustration: with a $50 cap, a $100 first bet earns $50, a $50 bet earns $50 and a $10 bet earns $10.

Is a sign-up bonus bet cash?

No. It's a token in a separate balance. Winning $50 at $2.00 credits $50 profit; the $50 token itself is never paid out.

How long do I have to use it?

Seven days from the time it's credited at Sportsbet (clause 6.2) and TAB (clause 67.1), unless the offer says otherwise.
